Balance Centre is implementing the “Empowering Women in Agrifood” (EWA) program as part of the initiative “Developing Entrepreneurial Capacities for Women in the Agri-Food Sector in Central and Eastern Europe,” funded by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT).The regional EWA program operates in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Estonia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

As part of the program, 10 women entrepreneurs in the agri-food sector in Albania were supported through a series of activities and mentoring from March to December 2025. EIT Food entrusted Balance Centre to implement the EWA program in Albania. By connecting industry, academia, the startup community, and key sector stakeholders, the program aims to address and help manage the unique challenges women entrepreneurs face, while encouraging their active participation in the agri-food sector.

Program Information

Entrepreneurs are paired with mentors who guide and facilitate their skills development. Participants gain access to knowledge, resources, and best practices from EIT Food and tools used by businesses in the sector, as well as networking opportunities. Mentoring is provided through online and/or in-person sessions, covering modules on leadership, agri-food trends, innovation, business presentations, financial management, environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices, using interactive tools such as real-life case studies and practical exercises.

The program concludes with a 'Demo Day,' where the entrepreneurs present their business ideas and progress. Their products are showcased, and two winners receive prizes and financial support to advance their businesses.

Balance Centre provides a dynamic approach that emphasizes mentoring, practical skills development, and stakeholder engagement to empower women entrepreneurs.

Leveraging EIT Food networks and social media to collect applications from women entrepreneurs and mentors. Gathering business ideas, challenges, and needs from applicants. Simultaneously, collecting mentor applications based on expertise and availability.
Connecting entrepreneurs and mentors through interactive sessions.
Weekly online or in-person sessions to support the development of entrepreneurs.
Hybrid modules covering leadership, agri-food trends, innovation, business presentations, financial management, and ESG practices, using interactive tools like real-life case studies and practical exercises.
Presentation of business ideas, progress of entrepreneurs, and networking opportunities with key stakeholders in the agri-food sector at Destil Creative Hub. Participants include EIT Food, ECO, MARD, MEKI, MEBC, AIDA, startup agencies, development organizations (EU, GIZ, UN Women, USAID, Challenge Fund, EBRD), and ecosystem actors.
Engaging participants and sharing updates through digital platforms, newsletters, and social media campaigns by Balance Centre and EIT Food.

Empowering Women in Agrifood (EWA) is a pioneering program led by EIT Food, dedicated to equipping women entrepreneurs in the agri-food sector with the tools they need to thrive. In our sixth year, we are excited to welcome 130 talented women entrepreneurs from 13 countries.
